Chuck Santry

Bilateral Knee Replacement

"I want to say that I waited as long as possible to have knee surgery. I was waiting for the "miracle' cure, which never happened. While waiting I had cortisone shots for at least 3 years every 90 days, the efficacy diminished as I continued these shots. I also tried PRP and other injectables. I was determined to push out surgery as long as possible since I was still able to play tennis 3-5 times per week, albeit with large doses of Aleve. On January 8 I had a complete left knee replacement. The recovery and physical therapy were hard, but the result was incredible. I was hitting balls at 5 weeks and starting to play competitively at 8 weeks. There was NO pain in the knee for the first time in over 10 years. This procedure was so successful that I decided to do my right knee. Cottage Hospital now had the Mako knee robot as of March 2019. Dr. Gallivan offered me the choice of his surgical skills alone or his skill alone with Mako. I chose the latter. I must let you know that I was awake for both surgeries and it was incredible. The right knee surgery was successful, but for the first 10 days I was concerned the recovery was slower than the first leg knee surgery. That all changed the 14 day mark. Physical therapy along with the precision of the Mako sped up the healing process. I actually started playing competitively at 6 weeks with a support brace. but with NO pain. Now I question why did I wait so long. Of course looking back I was waiting for Dr. Gallivan to arrive! Cheers."

David Gillon

Left Knee Replacement

"I injured both knees in the 1980s and had minor surgery on both, then a major procedure on the left. The effectiveness of these procedures lasted only a short time. I could not run and experienced many episodes of swelling and pain due to minor injuries during normal activities of daily living. I saw Dr. Gallivan to discuss my options. I opted for the surgery rather than the other stopgap measures. Surgery was scheduled. Dr. Gallivan explained in detail the surgery and made available detailed information via the internet.

Because of Covid-19, I entered Cottage hospital in the morning of December 1, 2020 and was discharged that evening. I was given the opportunity to watch the surgery in it’s entirety. It was fascinating.

My post-op instructions were clear and I went home with all the medications I needed from the hospital pharmacy. The post-op equipment I needed was ordered by Dr. Gallivan and delivered to my home the day prior to surgery. The operation of the equipment was fully explained.

A physical therapist came to the house three times a week. She was clear and knowledgeable. I continue to do the exercises twice a day, every day, as taught by her. Within two weeks, I had increased my daily walk to 2-4 miles each day.

It takes a long time to fully recover from a total knee replacement, but already, I have less pain than I did for all those years before the surgery. The recovery has been more rapid than I had anticipated.

Thank you, Dr. Gallivan, and all those who were involved.

Jerry Shalhoob

Right Knee Replacement

When I had Consultation with Dr. Gallivan he informed me after reviewing my x-rays that my knee was well worn and that had options to take care of my problem, he said there are some drugs that will help for the short term and some injections that might give me temporary relief, he then said there is the other option of a total knee replacement, without a doubt I wanted to go for the total replacement, I asked him how long the recovery would be before I could resume my regular activities, which included kitefoil boarding my main sport, and standup paddle surfing, he informed me that do to my age that he would expect that in four to six months I should be able to resume my regular activities, he then asked me what my goals where, I told him that I wanted to be back in the water in 60 day, he then said we will see what happens, after successful knee replacement and some very intense physical therapy sessions with
Nick Maly with Webber Physical Therapy I was able to get myself back in the water in 50 days, I did attack the P.T. like a new sport, I would highly recommend Dr. Bill Gallivan and Nick Maly P.T.

Joel Baker

Bilateral Knee Replacement

I had my left knee replaced by Doctor Galvan in 2013. I was able to start riding horses within four weeks. I was back playing polo within several months in 2013. It took me over a year to get real comfortable on the tennis court. Because of the arthritic pain I was getting from the right knee I was only able to play about an hour of tennis at a time. At the end of October 2020, doctor Galvan replaced the right knee. The recovery time seemed to be much shorter. I started riding 16 days after the surgery and playing polo within 21 days. I also started hitting the tennis ball on the 15th day. I was able to start moving on the tennis court by the 30th day. Before having a right knee replacement, I had a hard time playing much more than an hour of tennis at a time. I'm now playing two to three nights a week, two to three hours. I currently play polo two to three days a week, ridding six to 8 horses each time. For the first time in 20 years I'm able to walk down steep hills pain free. I'm able to ski all day pain free.

Roberta Hewson

Bilateral Hip Replacements

Both of my formerly arthritic hips were replaced by Dr. William Gallivan Jr.

With a spinal block for both surgeries, that allowed me stay awake, I listened to Dr. Gallivan as he operated and coordinated with his team. I was able to watch the surgeries on the overhead monitors. I was able to listen as Dr. Gallivan operated- and when he and his team were calling out numbers, back and forth- it was like listening-in on an airline control tower group. They were making sure with all those numbers that my leg was going to be the proper length and that the implant would fit well.

I was back in my room for about three hours, and then walking around the halls. I felt good! Both times after surgery, Dr. Gallivan visited me in my hospital room and reported all had gone well. That made me feel even better. The day after each surgery, I was home. That’s how good it all went.

I felt so taken care of- Dr. Gallivan’s office set me up to have physical therapy people come to my home a few times a week for a few weeks. Then, a few follow-up visits with Dr. Gallivan, and approximately five weeks of PT.

On week six of each surgery, I was back teaching chair and mat yoga four times a week. I took it easy at first, felt my way, and within a few weeks I was back to my old self! My students remarked about my abilities so early on, and requested the name of my GREAT surgeon!

Additionally, Dr. Gallivan’s office staff are awesome- patient, understanding, kind, and knowledgeable.

Now, during COVID, I’m teaching on Zoom, walking three miles a day, dancing in my living room, and looking forward to dancing with the crowds again after COVID!

Steve Burnett

Bilateral Knee Replacement

Both of my formerly arthritic hips were replaced by Dr. William Gallivan Jr.

I’ve had both knees totally replaced by Dr Gallivan. I’ve been active my entire life. Running, cycling and especially water sports - kiteboarding, paddling and surfing - all had taken their toll on my knees. Due to pain and swelling I was losing the ability to enjoy the activities that were so central to my life. After years of increasing pain, and declining flexibility and strength, I had Dr Gallivan replace my left knee. A year later he replaced my right knee. Best decisions ever! The entire experience has exceeded my expectations. Everyone in the office, during surgery and in post op physical therapy has been great. I was back enjoying my regular activities just 42 days after surgery. I no longer have any pain or swelling and have regained the flexibility I needed. My knees are as strong now as ever before. I highly recommend Dr. Gallivan and his whole team if you have any problem with your knees.

Nancy Golden

Right & Left Knee Replacements

"Yesterday I had my one year anniversary checkup of my left knee replacement and the two year anniversary of my right knee replacement with Dr. Gallivan. He did such an outstanding job with each knee. I skied last week at Mammoth with my knees holding up better than in years. I love being able to continue to be active.

Dr. Gallivan is the one to go to for knee replacement operations.”

Jay Oliver

Total knee

“Back to what I love 6 weeks after my surgery! Thank You Doctor Gallivan for doing a great job!!!”

John West

Bilateral Knee Replacement

“For many years, my wife Sue and I have been planning a safari expedition to Africa. Many of the wild animals are best, and most safely viewed from a vehicle. But we also wanted to visit the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. To do that, it is necessary to hike across fields and into the forest. A tracker leads the way, blazing a path through thick vegetation with a machete. The trail can be steep, very uneven and muddy. As time passed, the trip kept getting pushed back. We realized we were not get in any younger, and we finalized the plans. All the while, my knees continued their years-long decline due to osteoarthritis. Perhaps caused by all the pavement pounding from my younger days when I did a lot of running. Perhaps there was a genetic component. Who knows? After discussing this this on a yearly basis with my family doctor, I turned to Dr. Gallivan in 2015. Taking a conservative approach, we tried a series of injections in each knee. They helped for a while, but it became clear that was not the long term solution, especially with hikes in the African mountain forests in my future. So in 2016, I had both knees replaced. The right one in March and the left one in October. Both surgeries went smoothly. It was not a picnic in the park, but everything was very manageable. I was out of the hospital quickly, and the outpatient physical therapy started immediately. Dr. Gallivan was an excellent choice for this. He listens carefully, is focused on achieving the best possible outcome, and stays involved post-operatively. His office staff are all excellent. There was never a problem. In February 2017, about one year after the first surgery and four months after the second, I was with Sue in Africa, hiking on fully functioning, pain free knees to visit the mountain gorillas.”

Dr. Michael Cooper

Knee

“For two years I interviewed orthopedic surgeons from St. Helena to Los Angeles. All of them told me that it would take 4 to 6 weeks to recover. My staff and I could not afford 4 to 6 weeks off work. Finally my pain got so bad I didn't have a choice. I had been referred to Dr. Gallivan by numerous people. Having interviewed so many orthopedic surgeons I knew immediately that Dr. Gallivan was the surgeon I wanted to do my knee surgery. I was walking the moment I got to my room! My knee had 90 degrees of motion. I never had any pain. I never took any pain medication. I returned to work in 1 week. For anyone procrastinating about their surgery I highly recommend an interview with Dr. Gallivan.”

Melissa Moore

Bilateral Knee Replacements

“Nothing short of a miracle...that is how I would describe my double knee replacement surgery with Dr Gallivan. After 20 years of ever increasing knee pain, my active lifestyle became impossible to maintain. In October 2015, at the age of 70, I had my right knee replaced. Surgery was on a Tuesday, I was home Wednesday. In-home rehab began Friday. The pain was very manageable. Sixteen days post-op I began outpatient therapy with minimal pain and no pain meds. Three months post-op I took my horse on a 3-hour ride with friends. I eagerly had the left knee replaced in December 2015. Result very similar to the first. Discomfort, but very manageable. My greatest difficulty was reactions from the meds following surgery. The actual knee pain was gone...only the incision caused tenderness. I have NO PAIN!!! I have resumed riding and competing with my horses, hiking, walking, swimming, without any limits. I truly feel 20 years younger, my legs are strong and straight. Dr Gallivan is my hero...he has given me my life back, there are not enough great adjectives to describe his skill and kindness through both procedures.”

Audrey Griffin

Numerous orthopedic procedures!

“To whom this may concern,

Dr. Bill Gallivan is my nephew by marriage. My late husband Dr. Gary Griffin and I were so very thrilled that Bill and Karen decided to make their home in Santa Barbara. Gallivans and Griffins are a very close family and have family gatherings quite often. Dr. Bill is a wonderful family man, so that puts him available and on call quite a bit.

I'm very involved with horses and lots of unsuspecting things happen. My rotator cuff surgery was perfect and good as new, my broken hand and baby finger went well too, I'm still roping and that is my passion. A few shots in the knees have worked wonders, Dr. Bill is always there for me, works in a very loving kind professional way.

Dr. Bill Gallivan is the best!! I'm so blessed to be a part of the Gallivan, Griffin Families. Always funloving being together.

Jackie Diebold

Bilateral Knee Replacements

“ When I made my decision to investigate knee surgery, because of a former sports injury, I looked for an orthopaedic specialist who was practicing the newest cutting-edge technology. I made an appointment with William R. Gallivan, Jr., M.D.

At my initial appointment, Dr. Gallivan's welcoming personality put me immediately at ease. He thoroughly explained knee replacement procedures. He made certain I understood what to expect and how I would be involved in the process and recovery outcome. He answered all my questions and I knew he was sincere and really cared about me as a patient.

Dr. Gallivan performed my first knee replacement in 2007 (I needed to be able to dance at our 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration....and dance I did!) My husband and family are Dr. Gallivan's greatest cheerleaders testifying that he made me 10 years younger. He replaced my second knee in 2008 and we have been happily dancing ever since!”

Maxine Di Bartolomeo

Knee replacement

“I am 75 years old and I have always loved to dance â ballet, tap, character, musical-comedy, aerobic -anything but ballroom. Lots of orthopaedic surgeries have interrupted dance: low-back fusion at 33 years; two new hips in my 60's; bilateral bunions somewhere in between; shoulder spur surgery; and finally, knee replacement by Dr. Gallivan 3 years ago. Yes, the healing process hurt for a short whileâ but the result has been more than worth it. Yes, the physical therapists encourage just a little more than one thinks it is possible to do -- but again, it has been more than worth the effort. The meticulously performed operation, the amazingly brief hospital stay (just overnight!), and the excellent physical therapy program got me back on my feet instantly and back to low-impact aerobics with a well-functioning, pain-free knee. Grazie mille, Dr. Gallivan for your professional skills, forthright truthfulness, and excellent judgement!"

Neil Ohlenkamp

Hip and ACL Replacements

“After successful hip replacements and an ACL replacement, Dr. Gallivan got me back on my feet again. I have returned to teaching judo classes, helped prepare an athlete to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games, and published a judo instructional book. The care I received was always exceptional.”

Paul Matthies

Partial Knee Replacement

“For several years I have been bothered by a deteriorating knee which has hampered my ability to keep up with a group of senior hikers in the Santa Ynez Valley. After soliciting recommendations from those fellow hikers who have knee and/or hip replacement surgery the obvious choice was Dr. Gallivan. A week ago I had a partial knee replacement procedure done at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara by Dr. Gallivan and his able staff of medical and technical assistants. He used new computerized technology which reduces the time of recovery, healing, and hospital stay. I was walking with no limping or pain medication after two days. Although the procedure was done only eight days ago I feel like I'm back to 90% normal. It should be noted that at no time did I experience any pain, either in preparation of the procedure, during the operation or during a week of physical therapy so far. I took a mile long walk with my wife this morning which included some fairly steep hills and felt no discomfort.

If you are suffering from knee or hip discomfort, I highly recommend Dr. Gallivan to solve the problem."

Jane Kievit

Shoulder and knee replacements

“Who is the best doctor in the world?

DR. WILLIAM GALLIVAN!!

He is knowledgeable, educated, skillful, and careful in all his decisions and functions. His optimistic, friendly communications with patients is another bonus.

I've been blessed with good genes and good health, but after 80 years arthritis found my joints!

My first visit to Dr. Gallivan was 11/21/07 to check my aching right shoulder. He performed an outpatient shoulder arthroscopy on 1/11/08. No more pain, good movement.

On 10/20/09 Dr. Gallivan performed a complete left shoulder replacement. It all moves and works perfectly!

On 4/19/14 Dr. Gallivan performed a complete left knee replacement.

Another miracle!

As I get older I've slowed down, but stay active. I joined the Senior Functional Fitness class at our local YMCA on 1/21/03. The helpful, cheerful, positive attitudes of staff and other members is a real plus for physical and emotional fitness!”

Efrem Zimbalist

Knee Replacement

“What can I say more than that Bill is a cherished friend and a great surgeon? This ancient knee keeps me almost vertical on the golf course and playing better than I have in five years. We won't discuss scores if you don't mind. On top of everything else, he and Karen have given their five kids the ride of their lives.”

Gery w. Mcormack Ed.D.,JD

Hip replacement

“When Dr. Gallivan told me that I would be playing tennis three months after hip replacement surgery, I did not believe him.

Three months (to the day) later I was dressed in Venus Williams new lime of Tennis clothing, winning my match against Ojai and having my photo signed by Venus, who wrote: "You look like a winner!"

Please contact me at drgerry2@verizon.net for the complete story of my miraculous recovery from hip replacement surgery.

Thanks Dr. G"

Scott Smith

Hip Replacement

“I received a total hip replacement from Dr. Gallivan and within 6 weeks, I was cycling and swimming at about my same level pre-surgery. My hip, lower back and groin pain is completely gone and my leg length is perfect. I researched Ortho Surgeons in my area and liked the fact that Dr. Gallivan uses the Navigation to get the complicated angles just right. Dr. Gallivan explained my procedure to me very thoroughly and was completely accessible to me after the surgery. I am a happy patient and look forward to getting my active lifestyle back.”

Karen Zazon

Total knee replacement

“I was told that I would need a knee replacement several years ago by various surgeons I had seen in a different state where I formerly lived. I avoided it for several years because I couldn't imagine the downtime I would have to endure as I have always been very active. Several friend referrals led me to Dr. Gallivan and I decided it was time to do the surgery. I went into it in good shape and with a positive attitude. I knew I would have a good outcome but I was shocked at how quickly I was able to walk with ease and without pain.

It has been just 12 days since my surgery and I have no pain except for during some of the strenuous PT exercises, which is the only time I take a pain pill.

Since I was awake during surgery, I found it fascinating to watch the procedure. I knew I was in good hands. I feel so good just 12 days post surgery and believe that Dr. Gallivan's method of using computer-guided navigation is so amazing. I'm already taking walks and feel so good. I'm so glad I made the right choice in choosing Dr. Gallivan for my surgeon.”

Chuck Pierce

Two knee replacement

“Arthritis in both knees got so bad I sold my paddle board and kayak. It was starting to get more difficult getting into my truck and I couldn't carry groceries up my driveway. My quality of life was confined to my lounge chair, I had to do something..3 of my friends recommended Dr. Gallivan with confidence. I had two knee replacements done 5 weeks apart. After each surgery, I left the hospital the next day. I had a very good experience and had a successful outcome, I am pain free and able to walk the neighborhood twice a day now and happy to report I am able to walk through the sand to enjoy the beach again.. My knees are better now than before they developed arthritis.... Chuck from Lompoc”

Ramiro "Ray" Lopez

Bicompartmental R knee replacement

“I had my right knee replaced and it feels great! It has been 6 months and I can do everything I want except for kneel. And I am 76 years old and just walked in a cancer fundraiser. I did it last year before my knee replacement and it really hurt. This year I did 3 miles without pain!”

David Borgatello

Left Knee Replacment

“After visiting Dr. Gallivan's office about 3 years ago and giving me an x-ray on my left knee, on my first visit he told me that I needed to have surgery. At that point he told me that it was up to me and when I felt ready to do surgery to come back and see him. Doctor was not pushing for surgery he said I would know when I was ready for surgery. After 8 months I called in and made appointment for my surgery. I had surgery at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Hospital was terrific. His follow up was extremely well done. His office staff called me to check up on me periodically to see how I was doing. I've had 4 office visits for check ups and I have 1 more scheduled for this year. I absolutely have no pain whatsoever on my left knee. I would like to thank Dr. Gallivan and his medical team for a great job!”

Tom Pfannenstiel

Left knee and left hip replacement

“DR.GALLIVAN REPLACED MY HIP 14 YRS AGO AND I WAS COMPLETELY SATISFIED.

THIS JUNE HE DID A TOTAL LEFT KNEE REPLACEMENT AND I AM TOTALLY PAIN FREE AND WALKING LIKE I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED IN QUITE SOME TIME,AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, HE IS A "WATER WALKER" AND THE ONLY ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON I WOULD EVER USE.”

Suzanne Post-Glunt

Total Hip Replacement

“I am 71 years old and have always been a very active person until both of my hip joints became almost immobilized by arthritis. I put off surgery for many years because I did not want to take the time off work required for surgery and recovery.

In 2016 I finally retired and after much research on orthopedic surgeons in the area I decided on Dr. Gallivan, which, as it turned out, was the best decision I could have ever made.

Dr. Gallivan was thorough throughout the whole process from diagnosis to post surgery care and put me completely at ease from my first appointment through two hip replacement surgeries.

He has a wonderful staff who were always helpful and friendly, and Jackie, who does his scheduling, made all the preparatory appointments go smoothly for me.

Dr. Gallivan is a first class orthopedic surgeon who uses the latest technology to make sure all his patients get the best possible results. He is also a really nice person with a great sense of humor, which for me was the icing on the cake.

He has given me a whole new lease on life and made it possible for me to return to all the activities I so much enjoy and in record time. I highly recommend him to anyone considering a joint replacement surgery.”

Griffin K.

Femoral Surgery

“Dr. Gallivan is as good as they get. My memory is swift as I was 3 years old when he performed surgery on my shattered left Femur. However, my parents always told me how wonderful and caring he was about me and my recovery post surgery. And let me tell you about my recovery! It was rough going, but because Dr. Gallivan performed such a good surgery, I've been able to play 8 different sports in my life as well as excel very well in them.. Not a single problem in that leg and It's all thanks to Dr. Gallivan. Highly recommend him. ”

Evelynn Smith

Knee replacement surgery

“I had consulted with numerous doctors because I was having problems with my back, my knee and my foot. Other doctors felt that it was not necessary to have a knee replacement. It was not until after I met with Dr. Gallivan that I decided I would go ahead with knee replacement surgery. Even though Dr. Gallivan was the only doctor who recommended knee replacement surgery, I trusted his advice because of his sincerity and because I had heard recommendations from many, many people.

He also put me in touch with a doctor for my foot problems who said I should have foot surgery. The recuperation would be the same as if I had knee replacement surgery. I was really feeling crippled because of my foot, my knee and my back. Dr. Gallivan is extremely professional yet incredibly friendly. A few months after my surgery, it was amazing to realize that my foot was feeling better and my back also was feeling better. The knee replacement seemed to have helped the other areas of my body also. Dr. Gallivan was accessible. It was so nice to have a doctor who took his patient's care so seriously.

I highly recommend Dr. Gallivan when considering a surgeon.”

Patricia P.

Unicompartmental; Total knee replacement

“After doing a lot of research for an orthopedic surgeon who was trained in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, I found Dr. Gallivan. In 2004 he did a unicompartmental replacement on my right knee which almost 11 years later is still working well for me.

Ten years later, it was my left knee but it required a total knee replacement.I would not consider anyone doing my surgery other than Dr. Gallivan. I was only in the hospital overnight and have made wonderful strides in my recovery.

Dr. Gallivan is without a doubt the best doctor I have ever had. He takes the time to listen and to answer any questions. He's compassionate and considerate. My surgery was excellent. I travel 2 1/2 hours to see Dr. Gallivan and would never consider going anywhere else because of his skills, his ethics, his professionalism, his care.”

James Paul Brown

Knee replacement

“Thank you so much for a very successful surgery!

I was walking within 24 hours, needed no pain medication, and within a month's time I got back on track with my daily walk on the Carpinteria bluffs. My wife and I found you, Karen, and your entire staff delightfully friendly and helpful as well. Many, many thanks!! James Paul Brown ”

Terry Daly

Knee & Hip Replacements

“I am happy to relate my experience with Dr. Gallivan. I have had 2 surgeries; one knee and one hip. And, here i am at 90 years of age playing golf 3 times a week with no pain or restrictions of any kind. I even shot better than my age for my 90th birthday! His conscientious, professional approach is outstanding in that he stalled at my last surgery until he was assured by my heart doctor that I was fine for surgery.

His staff are well qualified and personable and attentive to your needs.

I offer my very strongest recommendation regarding his professional skills and services!”

CAPT P. M. Insch, USN (Ret)

Bilateral total knee replacements

“Dr. Gallivan replaced my right knee in mid June 2013 and my left knee exactly 4 weeks later. That's a pretty sporty schedule, but it worked out great for me. It's only now with my new knees and walking comfortably again that I fully realize how constrained I had let my life become due to constant knee pain. I just got back from a two week Alaskan "do it yourself" (unguided) archery moose and black bear hunt, based out of a remote lake 60 miles south of Denali. My hunting partner on this trip and good friend happens to be a Navy SEAL, and 28 years younger than me. You can believe we walked a lot, and as fast as I could travel across the spongy muskeg and through the mud. Neither of us released an arrow, but that's OK - we called a 7' tall, 1400lb, bull moose in to 30 yards and that awesome sight alone made it all worthwhile. Truly an amazing experience, and I did it ALL on only about as much ibuprofen as I used to take on any ONE given day with my old knees. Thanks Bill, Karen and all your team for giving me the tools to truly get back in the game.”

Mike Nutik

ORIF Leg Fracture and Knee Replacement

“This is a letter of recommendation for Dr. William Gallivan. He operated on me 12 years ago to repair a surgery which was done incorrectly in Canada. At that time, my leg was broken in 2 places as a result of a skiing accident. Dr. Gallivan was able to break and reset my leg successfully. This August (2014) he performed knee replacement surgery on me. I was able to leave and walk out of the hospital the same day! I highly recommend Dr. Gallivan and have referred 3 of my friends to him. They have all had their surgeries and they have all been very pleased. I would be very happy to speak on his behalf. My name is Michael Nutik and my phone # is 805-565-1194.”

Sally Moore/Kathleen Milner

Right and Left Knee Replacements

“Dr. Gallivan touches more than just the lives of his patients; he impacts whole families. My mother, Sally Moore, has had both knees replaced by Dr. Gallivan. She scheduled them 6 months apart. She couldn't be happier and told me just yesterday that her knees do not hurt.

For so many, the goal after surgery is to return to the golf course, tennis court, or hiking trail, but for my mother, her goal was to keep up with her grandkids. Family is everything! She is a retired Kindergarten teacher and now spends 3 days a week with our 4 year old twins and our 7 year old son.

Now 9 months after the left knee and 3 months after the right, she can outlast the kids, is up and down off the floor, walks with confidence, and can stand up pain free.

The outcome is fantastic, but we have tremendous praise for the process as well. From the first meeting with Dr. Gallivan to the last follow up appointment, we have been met with efficiency, kindness, and thoroughness from him and his staff. Simply put, Dr. Gallivan is the best! We traveled from San Luis Obispo to see him, but would have happily gone much further! It is wonderful to watch her move without pain. My kids have a Grandma that can do everything they can!”

Vaughn Gurney

Knee Replacements

“As is the case with most people as they age, health difficulties arise to take their attention and their money. My knees were one of the concerns as I got older, what with the cartilage leaving in a noticeable and painful way. In my conversations with others I discovered that complete knee replacement was the solution and I would know when the time arrived to have them done. That time occurred when we were working part-time at Cachuma Lake. One of my fellow workers had his knees replaced so successfully that he always said "he could walk forever". So, on

September 11, 2012, Dr. Gallivan performed the surgery at the Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. I had made a commitment to follow the doctor's instructions to the letter, in healing up, and particularly, in the rehabilitation. I had excellent physical therapists, both in San Ynez and in Lompoc, and I am pleased to say on October 23 of 2014, that all is well and I really feel "I can walk forever". Charlie, small black poodle, and I head out every morning on our morning hour walk here in Lompoc, to get a newspaper and do his duty. In addition to the flawless and professional surgery, I was most amazed to have straight legs, apparently by GPS. ”

Sandra Williams

Both Knees Replaced

“As you can see, I LOVE a life of adventure. So when I turned 67 and arthritis in my knees interfered with my lifestyle, urgent intervention was needed. What to some may seem unfortunate- having a stroke- is how I became acquainted with Dr. Gallivan. My neurologist sent me to him for my knees with the order to, "Do it now!" So, I followed his advice and got two new knees by Dr. Gallivan, both within eight months. I walked out of the hospital the next day after each of the surgeries. I was off narcotics the fourth day after surgery. At the three month mark, the only reminder I had of having knee replacement surgery was the sensation over the incisions when I shaved my legs! I am now doing lunges and looking forward to a trip trekking Machu Picchu! Please email me if you have any questions. I can be reached at: Tsunamismommy@icloud.com”

Sally Moore

Knee Replacement

“Dr. Gallivan touches more than just the lives of his patients, he impacts whole families. My mother Sally Moore has had both knees replaced by Dr. Gallivan. She scheduled them 6 months apart. She couldn't be happier and told me just yesterday that her knees do not hurt.

For so many the goal after surgery is to return to the golf course, tennis court, or hiking trail, but for my mother, her goal was to keep up with her grandkids. Family is everything. She is a retired Kindergarten teacher & now spends 3 days a week with my 4 yr old twins and 7 yr old.

Now 9 months after the L knee and 3 months after the R knee she can outlast the kids, is up and down from the floor, walks with confidence, and can stand up pain free.

The outcome is fantastic but we have tremendous praise for the process as well. From the first meeting with Dr. Gallivan to the last follow up appointment we have been met with efficiency, kindness, and thoroughness from he and his staff. Simply put, Dr. Gallivan is the best. We traveled from San Luis Obispo to see him but would have happily gone much further!

It is wonderful to watch her move without pain. My kids have a Grandma that do all that they can.”

Rotator cuff repair

“Dr. Gallivan repaired my right rotator cuff approximately seven years ago.Following a brief rehab program, I've had no problems and enjoy full mobility of my right shoulder and arm. A total success.”

Total knee replacement

“Three months after Dr. Gallivan replaced my second knee (my other knee was one year old), I was hiking up the cobblestone streets to Edinburgh Castle and climbing to the top of the stadium to observe the military tatttoo presented by the Scots military. Eight months later, I climbed to the top of the Acropolis. I think my replacement knees are better than the real thing! Now I am thinking about where I can go next year to see what I can climb! ”

Shoulder and Knee Replacements

“One-stop shopping is not usually associated with a doctor except by my husband. He managed to rupture his Achilles tendon and tear his rotator cuff, all before needing a total knee replacement. Luckily, Dr. Gallivan is here in Santa Barbara. Both the Achilles tendon and the shoulder injury were very serious and rather complicated surgeries with a long recovery. No problem with Dr. Gallivan. Owen now walks completely normally with absolutely no sign of the Achilles tendon rupture, and he wishes that his other shoulder were as good as the one Dr. Gallivan repaired.

His knee replacement is an even more amazing story. I had a total knee replacement with Dr. Gallivan four years ago. Like most people, I had put it off for years, dreading the horrors shared by so many friends who had had the operation. My physical therapist recommended Dr. Gallivan, telling me that he was the only one in town using a computer-assisted method to perfect the alignment, which resulted in much quicker and more complete recovery. Bless that man! My knee surgery was not at all what I expected, and I was back doing everything I normally do in less than two months, and that includes going to the gym 6 days a week, hiking, biking, and lots of walking. Except for the few moments a day when you have to work hard to regain the range of motion in the knee, I experienced no pain. And what a joy to move again without pain!

We weren't sure that Owen's knee surgery would be so easy since, at almost 80, he was ten years older than I had been. His was even easier. He was out of the hospital within 24 hours and had regained the required range of motion in his knee within two weeks. Even the physical therapist was amazed. Dr. Gallivan had changed a few of his techniques in the time since my surgery, and it was an even better experience. As I write this, it is five weeks since Owen had his surgery, and there is very little that he cannot do. He had a little more pain than I did, but none in the knee. His pain was more muscular as his leg became adjusted to being straight again after so many years of being distorted because of his knee problems. We have decided to wait a few more weeks before we take our first hike, but we are both confident that it will be pain free.

We cannot say enough good things about Dr. Gallivan and have already sent him many patients, all as happy as we are. Not only is Dr. Gallivan an extraordinary orthopedic surgeon, he is a wonderful human being. We look forward to seeing him and all the exceptional and responsive people of his staff. Hopefully, our visits will be social and not because my husband has blown up another body part!”

Knee Replacement

“I cannot say enough about how good my surgery experience with Dr. Gallivan and team was. It has been eight months and my new knee is requesting my other knee to meet the challenge again.

The staff that works with Bill are some of the most caring and professional people I've met. While living in New York City I worked for several years for doctors and know what it means to feel taken care of when suffering. I feel full confidence in Dr. Gallivan both of the PA's who saw me post op.

The fact that the rehab folks he works with are also extremely competent is very much part of a group of people who care about their patients.”

Knee Replacement

“Eight (8) weeks after knee replacement surgery playing golf and riding my horse, this was the statement made by Dr. Gallivan. At 63 years old and on my second knee replacement, I was definitely skeptical. But it happened, under the direction of Dr. Gallivan and working with the physical therapy team at Muller & Weber, I was able to achieve this feat as evidence in the pictures below. My new knee has eliminated the serious pain before the operation and has allowed me continue with the active life that I desire. Dr. Gallivan uses the most advanced computer added technology available and I highly recommend him.”

Knee Replacement

“I had been a runner, jogger and then hiker all my life but at age 79 it became apparent due to all the pounding on the pavement, I needed new knees. Being diabetic I knew that healing from surgery would be tricky, and presented some significant risks, so I decided to get opinions from USC and Stanford hospitals.

After receiving favorable opinions from both aforementioned hospitals, I ultimately wanted to be near my family and home in the Santa Ynez Valley, and thus proceeded to find an orthopedic doctor in the Cottage Health System. Dr. William Gallivan was the right choice, and within a year and a half I had both knees replaced.

Dr. Gallivan was thorough and professional with his treatment from diagnosis to post surgery care. I always had the upmost confidence and trust in him.

Due to my previous health issues, my rehabilitation was a bit more extensive. Dr. Gallivan was exceptional in directing my care not only, within Cottage Health System in Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez, but also the Rehabilitation Hospital and the outstanding wound clinic and hypobaric departments.

Dr. William Gallivan is truly a first class orthopedic doctor and Santa Barbara County is truly lucky to have him serving its community.”

Total knee replacement

“What relief. No more pain. I can move again. I had no idea how the pain in my knee had affected me. I'm back to dancing, hiking, playing badminton. I can golf and can carry my golf clubs. And surf. My knee was so stiff and weak. What a difference! Riding my bike up Gibraltar Road doesn't hurt. Yes, the surgery hurts but now that seems like a distant past. It's been one year since the surgery. Not afraid to get the other knee done if it needs to happen. I really got my life back. ”

Total Knee Arthroplasty

“I had my right knee replaced on Tuesday, 10/18/16. On Thursday I declared myself as advanced as it took me 3 weeks to accomplish ten years ago on my left knee replacement. I never had a pain over 5 on a 1 to 10 scale...ever !

And even more than the skill of Dr. Gallivan and his assistants , was the warmth exuded by everyone in the operating room and in the hospital stay.

I only wish I had done this a whole lot sooner and not wasted those years by limping around on a really bad leg.

My thanks to Dr. Gallivan and everyone involved !

Pat Schulte. Age 83”

Double knee replacement

“I have had double knee replacement in the last four months, the most recent nine weeks ago. Dr. Gallivan is not only an extraordinary surgeon but also a very kind, compassionate person. He has a terrific team working with him and I am so grateful that I can now walk without pain, go upstairs and down in a normal manner and can even kneel! What a gift! Thank you so very much Dr. Gallivan.”

Full Knee Replacement

“James J. Weakly Knee Surgery

I am an 83 year old male in good physical condition with the exception of my right knee. I have known Dr. Gallivan for several years and according to his diagnosis I was up for a full knee replacement.

Dr. Gallivan prescribed pre-op physical therapy to strengthen my legs which made my post-op therapy just a little easier on me. He used computer navigation to set the alignment of my knee. I was awake and able to watch the entire operation which was fascinating for me. After a brief hospital stay I was home and working with my physical therapist.

It is now three months since the surgery. I am walking with no pain and riding my bicycle in my neighborhood.

It has been a pleasure working with Dr. Gallivan's staff.

Thank you Dr. Gallivan”

L knee unicompartmental knee replacement

“"I had a partial knee replacement done by Dr Gallivan and his team a month ago in Santa Barbara -- the care and attention I received was honestly quite amazing - Dr Gallivan met with me before the surgery, and after the surgery would call me almost nightly to see how I was feeling, and to answer any concerns I may have had. His office staff were wonderful, always ready to help in any way, cheerful yet professional. I would highly recommend Dr Gallivan and his team!

And best of all, it has only been a month since the surgery and I already feel almost back to normal - in fact, one of the many details I appreciated from Dr Gallivan was that he did the surgery as a day case, so I could go straight back home in the afternoon, and walking (albeit with a cane for a few days) right away.....I now am back at the gym using the elliptical and the bike and feeling great!"”

Nelson Alexander

Knee replacement

“Nelson Alexander - I am 83

I live in Atascadero, Calif.

For the past 20 years I have nursed my right knee as it has deteriorated to the point on being bone on bone. It had become very painful to walk even with the use of a cane and almost impossible to walk up or down steps. Three friends who had the same problem told me about Doctor Gallivan and the success they had with him and their knee replacement. I met with Dr. Gallivan and we scheduled my surgery for Sept 26,2017. I was told by another individual that had been through the same surgery by another doctor that for the first month I would hate the surgeon, the second month I would like him, and the third month I would love him.

The surgery took place as scheduled. A few hours after the surgery, the nurse had me walk with a walker about 40 feet. The next morning I walked around the floor of the hospital and up and down 4 steps. That afternoon I was sent home. I knew how critical therapy was so beginning the next day I walked 50 steps in my house every hour on the hour. Beginning the second week I was walking without my walker or my cane. Within 3 weeks I was doing outside therapy and now at the end of 8 weeks I have the strength to go up and down steps with no problem. I have no pain & my knee is as it was 20 years ago when this all started.

It did not take 3 months to love my doctor, it took less than a week. I now join my 3 friends in recommending anyone who needs knee surgery, don't put it off. See Doctor Gallivan. I don't believe you could find a better surgeon in the state of Calif, or maybe in the USA."

Jack Rodenhi

Total Right Knee Replacement

“I had known for a long time that I would need to have something done with my right knee. Although it could be painful at times, it was primarily the lack of reliability that bothered me the most. The precipitating event that caused me to go see Dr. Gallivan was that day that I could not complete my stress echocardiogram test because my knee locked up mid-test.

I had already done some research over the prior few months and I had found some things to look for in choosing a surgeon to perform a knee replacement. I discovered that the two biggest risks are infections and blood clots, although the chance a patient would experience either of the events is quite small, less than 2%. As I explored more, though, I found that maybe as many as 20% of the people who undergo a total knee replacement surgery are not satisfied with the result. This seems to be a result of improper fit or adjustment. I know a retired fire captain who has never been happy with his knee replacement and says it has badly affected his enjoyment of golf to the point of him considering giving it up.

Some of the surgeons who addressed this latter concern primarily practice something called kinematic adjustment. When I looked, I saw that Dr. Gallivan used a computer aided navigation system that not only assisted with the kinematic adjustment, but also it allowed him a standard of precision and repeatability that was not possible without the system. In addition, Dr. Gallivan performs what is known as a minimally invasive procedure. Although the most visible result of this procedure is a significantly shorter scar, the most important result is that it calls for moving the quadraceps muscle and tendon aside, rather than cutting it. For the patient, this can mean a reduced recovery time.

I searched the web for stories from people who were facing or had gone through a total knee replacement, I found a forum (https://bonesmart.org/forum/) that hosted a pre-op and a post-op section. I was particularly concerned by the recovery stories that stretched into months and years. I needed to assure myself that I was prepared for what was ahead. There were plenty of supportive posters and the forum seemed like it provided a good center for people with a surgery in their future. In the end, I did not post my own story because, as I listened to the staff at Dr. Gallivanâs office, it seemed that for me at least participating in such a forum pre-surgery might only serve to increase my anxiety.

I had been told that I would be awake through the entire surgery. Although this worried me, I was assured by one of Dr. Gallivanâs staff that I would think I was in Disneyland. Not entirely true, but closer to true than my worries. I am glad to have been awake and able to watch my surgery and I hope I wasnât too boring for the anesthesiologist as I tried to keep up a light banter. After the surgery, I was wheeled to my room for an overnight stay. I had been forewarned that I would be expected to walk some that day. When I awoke from a nap, two terrific young nurses insisted that I get up and walk a few feet with a walker. I did not feel a lot of pain at that point so I was glad to comply. I was surprised that not only could I walk the 25 feet they expected of me but went on to walk completely around the joint replacement wing. I came back and took another nap.

The next day I came home, put my foot up and spent most of the afternoon in a good book. The next day, I went in to work for a couple of hours. I took it easy for a couple of days, but by the time for my follow-up visit with Dr. Gallivan eight days after surgery, I was able to walk from my car into his office without cane or walker. I have never used them since. I went to my physical therapy sessions as specified, but by the end of the month, my range of motion had almost completely returned.

My knee was so badly worn before the surgery that it was tiring to stand for a long time. I did not realize that I must have been providing stability in my knee by muscle tension. Now, six months after the surgery, I can stand for an hour or more and f
